2018 Traditional Medicine International Development Forum

On May 10th, Ambassador Lyu Jian was invited to the “2018 Traditional Medicine(TCM) International Development Forum (Thailand)”, jointly with Mr. Cui Shian, Chief Executive of Macao SAR, and Mr. Yan Shujiang, Deputy Director of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Ambassador Lyu Jian noted that at the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China held last year, President Xi Jinping made it clear that China “shall work hard to develop traditional Chinese medicine, follow the principle of attaching equal importance to traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine”. China attaches great importance to the cause of and to exchange and cooperation with other countries in the field of TCM. China and ASEAN countries have a long history of cooperation in traditional medicine. ASEAN is among the first to recognize TCM. Traditional medicine has become an important part of economic and trade cooperation and cultural exchanges with countries along “Belt and Road”. It will surely help to promote the connectivity of people of all countries, and enhance the well-being of people around the world.

Mr. Cui Shian pointed out in his speech that Macao attached great importance to use its scientific and technological advantages and platform functions to provide opportunities for ASEAN countries and Chinese traditional pharmaceutical enterprises to expand market both at home and abroad, promoting the internationalization of traditional medicine jointly.

Mr. Yan Shujiang indicated that TCM was an important field of Macao's appropriate and diversified economic development as the health industry with TCM as its main aspect enjoying sound momentum of development. Meanwhile, Macao had become an important platform for international cooperation of TCM. It was hoped this event would provide opportunity for Macao to deepen practical cooperation with ASEAN countries in the field of traditional medicine.

The forum was co-organized by the government of Macao SAR and the State Administration of TCM, with traditional medical education model, product development, trade and so on as main topic. Representatives of the Minister of Health from Thailand and Cambodia and nearly 400 people from government departments of ASEAN countries, enterprises and media attended the event.
