Tokyo stocks rise in morning with Nikkei hitting highest level since 1990

TOKYO, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks increased Thursday morning, as the benchmark Nikkei extended earlier gains reaching its highest intraday level since August 1990 on boosted U.S. stimulus hopes.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 497.15 points, or 1.84 percent, from Wednesday to 27,553.09.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 37.27 points, or 2.07 percent, at 1,833.45.

Every industrial category gained ground, while iron and steel, nonferrous metal and insurance issues comprised also those that gained the most by the morning break.
