Tokyo stocks open slightly higher on hopes for domestic firms' earnings

TOKYO, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened slightly higher Monday, as despite concerns over the outlook for the global economy the market remained optimistic about domestic corporate earnings results set to be released this week.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 31.66 points, or 0.14 percent, from Friday to 22,524.34.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 5.83 points, or 0.36 percent, at 1,627.82.

Pulp and paper, construction and nonferrous metal issues comprised issues that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
