Countries in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) call for enhanced e-commerce cooperation with China at the recent forum held in Kunming, capital province of southwest China's Yunnan province.
It is learned that the e-commerce development in the GMS countries is in the infancy. Some lag behind in the e-commerce field and hope to strengthen their cooperation with China. At present, as a global, open-ended, networked and efficient business model, the e-commerce is developing at an unprecedented speed and becomes an effective means for countries to enhance economic strength and allocate resources.
In recent years, China has maintained good momentum in the e-commerce development. The cross-border e-commerce has already become an important method for China to accelerate transformation of the foreign trade development mode. In 2015, China's cross-border e-commerce transactions reached 5.2 trillion yuan. There are more than 250,000 enterprises in China engaged in the cross-border e-commerce transactions. This year, the country's cross-border e-commerce transactions are expected to exceed 6.5 trillion yuan.
According to Ratthasart Korrasud from Thailand's Electronic Transactions Development Agency, the e-commerce has developed fast in Thailand in recent years. At present, 33 percent of the Thai people are using the Internet. In 2015, the e-commerce transactions in Thailand reached more than 27 billion U.S. dollars. This year, the Thai authorities enacted laws to promote the e-commerce development. The Thai government hopes to strengthen e-commerce cooperation with China to jointly crack down on cross-border e-commerce crimes.
Laos has lagged behind in the e-commerce development. There are no corresponding laws about the e-commerce. China and Laos enjoy huge space in the e-commerce cooperation, said Soukpanthong Vichit, co-founder of Laosaibai, a business-to-customer platform in Laos.
Im Koy from Cambodia's Ministry of Commerce said that there are a few registered e-commerce enterprises in Cambodia. The e-commerce can help export lots of Cambodian goods to China, showing huge market potential. He hoped that the Chinese enterprises can invest in the e-commerce projects in Cambodia.
Representatives of the government departments and enterprises in the GMS countries said that the dialogue on GMS cross-border e-commerce cooperation has laid a foundation for the cross-border e-commerce development in the region and will surely prompts countries to form their own e-commerce goods markets and promote rapid development of the e-commerce in the region.
