British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Thursday she will brief the European Union (EU) summit on Britain's proposals on how to protect the rights of citizens.

"I am very pleased to be here for the European Council today following the constructive start of our negotiations for the UK to leave the EU," she told reporters before going for the summit meeting.

"What I am going to be setting out today is clearly how the United Kingdom proposes to protect the rights of the EU citizens in the UK and the rights of the UK citizens in the Europe," she said.

She added these should be earlier issues to be considered in the Brexit negotiations.

The EU and Britain on June 19 launched the long-awaited Brexit negotiations at European Commission's headquarters in Brussels, nearly one year after Britain voted to leave the bloc by a narrow margin on June 23, 2016.

At the two-day summit, the EU leaders are also expected to discuss defense and security, migration, and economic and trade issues. May said she will also call for more cooperation on counter-terrorism.
