LONDON, June 28 (Xinhua) -- British gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 1.8 percent in the first quarter (Q1)2019, compared with the the same period a year earlier, according to figures released Friday by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

On the quarterly basis, British GDP rose by 0.5 percent in Q1 2019, compared with the previous quarter.

In terms of main sectors, services and construction quarterly increased by 0.4 percent and 1.4 percent in Q1 2019.

In addition, data showed that production grew by 1.1 percent quarter-on-quarter, hitting the strongest point since the second quarter in 2016, and manufacturing increased by 1.9 percent in Q1, recording the strongest rate since the third quarter 1999.

Rob Kent-Smith, head of GDP in ONS said: "GDP grew solidly and was unrevised in the first quarter of 2019, with manufacturing seeing strong growth due to orders being brought forward ahead of the UK's original EU departure date."
