Chinese automaker Dongfeng Automobile and its joint-venture partner Nissan Motors will recall 57,648 vehicles over software defects that could cause airbag malfunctions, according to China's top quality watchdog.

Dongfeng plans to recall 25,627 China-made Infiniti Q50L models manufactured between Oct. 16, 2014 and April 20, 2016, and 11,059 China-made Infiniti QX50 models manufactured between Dec. 27, 2014 and April 20, 2016, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement.

The Nissan recall involves 12,373 imported Infiniti QX60s produced between Nov. 13, 2013 and April 15, 2016, and 8,589 imported Infiniti Q50s produced between Feb. 6, 2014 and April 20, 2016.

Air bag malfunctions caused by software defects in control units could be dangerous, said the statement. The recall will start on Sept. 20, with the companies promising to replace the defective parts for free.
