China's Huawei and United Arab Emirates' (UAE) biggest telecom provider Etisalat said here on Tuesday they collaborated successfully on a new FTTH (fiber to the home) solution to provide 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps) broadband service.

The collaboration of Huawei and Etisalat on the new FTTH solution marked a successful test that made 10 Gbps as a transmission speed (for example for home television or video streaming) is possible in the UAE, but not yet in use.

Esmaeel Alhammadi, Etisalat senior vice president for network development, said in a statement that "the new broadband technology demonstrates that our existing network is capable of supporting future, next-generation PON (Passive Optical Network) technology." Etisalat constantly assesses new technology to expand its capabilities and to enhance its ability to support traffic growth demand from its customers, he added.

"Enabling a better connected world is a vision that both Huawei and Etisalat share for our customers," said Poundss Peng, President of Huawei Etisalat Global Key Account.

By partnering once again with Etisalat on this consumer broadband case, we have set the stage for developing intelligent management capabilities that can increase access to the modern information society, he added.

A Huawei spokesperson told Xinhua on request that it has not been decided when the UAE will go live with the 10Gbps solution. Founded in 1987, Huawei is a private company fully owned by its employees and headquartered in Shenzhen, operating in 170 countries. Etisalat is the most valuable firm in the UAE. Its shares are traded on the Abu Dhabi Exchange.
