Labor union of Hyundai Motor, South Korea's biggest automaker, said Thursday that the U.S. car import tariffs could lead to the loss of jobs in the United States as it may have to shut down its U.S. plant.
Hyundai Motor's union said in a statement that if slumping car sales at home and abroad lead inevitably to factory shutdown, an overseas plant should be the first to be closed down under the agreement between the management and the labor union.
If Hyundai is blocked from exporting its vehicles to the United States and its financial status deteriorates, Hyundai's Alabama plant would be first closed down and about 20,000 U.S. workers would risk being fired, the statement said.
The Hyundai union delivered the statement to the U.S. administration, according to Yonhap news agency report.
The statement said that the U.S. "tariff bomb" would reduce Hyundai's vehicle export to the United States by 330,000, noting that it would lead to the loss of 5,000-6,000 regular jobs and 20,000-30,000 jobs for subcontractors.
