U.S. leading aerospace company Boeing said Monday it donated more than 230 million U.S. dollars to support various kinds of non-profit projects in 2018, up more than 70 percent from the previous year.

Boeing said the donation included 55 million dollars in new charitable grants, which will support 443 nonprofit organizations in 47 countries. The package includes 13 million dollars for veterans' recovery and rehabilitation programs and workforce transition services.

Boeing also made a 10-year commitment totaling 1.1 million dollars to the U.S. National Archives Foundation to support the annual display of a historical document, the Emancipation Proclamation.

The document was issued by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln on Jan. 1, 1863, about the third year into the U.S. Civil War, which declared freedom of "all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states.

Earlier this year, Boeing increased its gift match levels after the U.S. government announced tax reform that reduced the standard corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 21 percent.

The Matching Gift scheme is a program offered by many U.S. companies to encourage employees to donate to charity projects by matching their contributions dollar for dollar, or doubling and even tripling the amount of their gift.

Boeing said its employee gifts matched by the company have increased 30 percent over the past five years.

Boeing's donation also covered support for education and scientific research programs.
On Monday, Fontbonne University, based in St. Louis, Missouri State, announced that Boeing has granted 26,000 dollars for its Girls-in-Science Summer Research Program aimed at promoting science as a future career among girls in junior high schools in the St. Louis region.
