Krombacher, the producer of one of Germany's best-selling beers, is ending its cooperation with the German Environmental Aid (DUH) lobby group, the newspaper Westfalenpost (WP) reported on Monday.
Franz-Josef Weihrauch, the spokesperson for the Kreuztal-based brewery, told WP that Krombacher had halted all payments to DUH as of 2018, adding that "no further cooperation with DUH is planned."
Krombacher did not name a reason for its decision to end its financial support for the environmental lobby group. "The company refrains from making a political evaluation," Weihrauch said.
The DUH has achieved notoriety in Germany for having sued several of the country's major cities in the wake of landmark court ruling which paved the way to the imposition of driving bans in the diesel emissions scandal. Amongst others, Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Frankfurt have since all been ordered to partially or fully remove older diesel vehicles from their streets in order to improve their air quality.
The Hannover-based organization has also faced criticism from some quarters for its aggressive lobbying style as well as for its receipt of funds from the Japanese carmaker Toyota.
Krombacher has sought to cultivate a public image as an unusually environmentally-conscious brewery for many years and launched a first project to help protect tropical rainforests together with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) back in 2002. The company has also made regular payments to the German Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) as part of a longer-standing cooperation.
Krombacher told WP that it was currently in the midst of discussions over which biodiversity projects to support going forward. Although it was still unclear when a final decision would be reached, the DUH will no longer be amongst the beneficiaries of its largesse.
