Tesco, the British supermarket giant, said on Monday that up to 9,000 jobs will be affected as the company attempts to reshape its business.
In a statement, the retailer said it will close food counters in about 90 stores, while the remaining counters in 700 stores will be run on a full-time or flexible basis.
Meanwhile, the company's head office will also be reorganized with the aim of focusing on supporting customers.
With over 300,000 employees across Britain, Tesco said "we will be doing all we can to help colleagues affected by these changes, including offering redeployment opportunities wherever possible."
Jason Tarry, chief executive of Tesco's British and Irish business, said: "In our four years of turnaround we've made good progress, but the market is challenging and we need to continually adapt to remain competitive and respond to how customers want to shop.
"We're making changes to our UK stores and head office to simplify what we do and how we do it, so we're better able to meet the needs of our customers," he added.
He acknowledged that the change will "impact some of our colleagues" and committed to minimise the effect as much as possible and to "support our colleagues throughout." Enditem
