Authorities in Brazil's southern Sao Paulo state said Thursday they are looking for a buyer for a Ford automotive plant that is about to close.
"There is no immediate concern about Ford's employees losing their jobs. They will keep working normally, and in the meantime, the government will help Ford find a buyer for the plant so that the workers can remain where they are, with a new company taking over the facilities," Governor Joao Doria said.
Doria spoke with reporters after meeting with Lyle Watters, president of Ford's South America operations.
Ford announced Wednesday that the plant in Sao Bernardo do Campo would be closing, though not immediately, as the company scales back operations in the region.
Ford will stop selling trucks in Brazil, and cut back its operations and labor force in South America by 20 percent.
About 3,000 people work at the Sao Bernardo do Campo plant, but the move is expected to lead to the loss of as many as 20,000 jobs, because of the region's reliance on the vehicle manufacturing sector.
According to Doria, Ford's three other plants in Sao Paulo state will remain in operation.
