SAN FRANCISCO, May 6 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Costco Wholesale Corporation on Wednesday reported net sales of 11.39 billion U.S. dollars for the retail month of April, the four weeks ended May 3, 2020, a decrease of 1.8 percent from 11.60 billion dollars last year.

April sales were negatively impacted by COVID-19. Stay-at-home orders, social distancing restrictions and some mandatory closures led to decreased traffic and sales in warehouses, while E-commerce grew by 85.7 percent from April last year, according to the report.

Limited service in travel and food courts, closures of most of optical, hearing aid and photo departments, and lower volume and price deflation in its gasoline business negatively impacted the company's April sales by an estimated 12 percentage points, of which approximately 70 percent is related to gasoline, Costco said.

For the thirty-five weeks ending May 3, 2020, the company reported net sales of 107.64 billion dollars, an increase of 7.8 percent from 99.89 billion dollars during a similar period last year, the company said.

Costco currently operates 787 warehouses, including 547 in the United States and Puerto Rico. The company opened its first store on the Chinese mainland last August in Shanghai. This February it confirmed plans to open a second store in the city.
