Huawei tops PCT patent applications for five straight years

SHENZHEN, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese tech company Huawei has topped the international Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) patent applications ranking among global applicants for five consecutive years as of 2021, the company said at a forum on Wednesday.

By the end of 2021, Huawei had filed more than 60,000 PCT patent applications and applied 200,000 invention patents worldwide, with more than 110,000 patents authorized. In the past two years, its invention patent applications numbered more than 10,000 every year, the company said at its 2022 innovation and intellectual property forum.

Huawei has made remarkable achievements in the 5G communication industry, declaring 6,583 patent families for 5G, accounting for 14 percent of the world's total and taking the lead among global applicants.

In the past five years, more than 2 billion smartphones have been licensed with Huawei's 4G/5G patents, and about 8 million connected vehicles are licensed with Huawei's 4G/5G patents each year.

According to the 2021 EU Industrial Research and Development Investment Scoreboard, Huawei ranks second among global companies in R&D investment. In 2021, Huawei invested 142.7 billion yuan (21.4 billion U.S. dollars) in R&D, accounting for 22.4 percent of its sales revenue, while the accumulated R&D investment in the past decade exceeded 845 billion yuan.
