WELLINGTON, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Google Cloud has decided to establish a New Zealand cloud region, a move welcomed by the New Zealand government.

The decision was made through Google Cloud's independent due diligence, and it is not a government procurement, according to New Zealand Minister for the Digital Economy and Communications David Clark on Wednesday.

"Becoming a cloud region will mean New Zealand businesses will have a choice to keep their data onshore, and work with Google Cloud's domestic team to really drive digital transformation here," Clark said in a statement.

Onshore cloud facilities provide stronger control of New Zealand's data because "it is held here, where our laws and protections apply," Clark said.

Last year in September, Amazon Web Services had decided to establish a cloud region in New Zealand. In 2020, Microsoft Azure set up a cloud region here, he said, adding that these moves help the country grow the digital economy.
