SYDNEY, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Mining giant Rio Tinto reported on Tuesday a slight rise in its iron ore shipment in the third quarter.

The production results released by the Anglo-Australian miner showed that shipments from its Pilbara operations in the past three months were 83.9 million tons, 1 percent higher year on year.

The figure was also 6 percent higher than the previous quarter, taking shipments for the year to date to 245.5 million tons, up 5 percent a year earlier.

The iron ore production in the third quarter was 83.5 million tons, 1 percent lower year on year, but a 3 percent improvement compared to the second quarter.

"We delivered another quarter of progress and maintained momentum at our Pilbara iron ore operations," said Rio Tinto Chief Executive Jakob Stausholm.

The mining giant also expects to see continued strong demand for its portside product in China. In the first nine months of this year, approximately 87 percent of Rio Tinto's portside sales were either screened or blended in Chinese ports.

Rio Tinto said it continues to expect full-year shipments in the upper half of the original 320 to 335 million-ton range.
