China's Beidou satellite navigation system has taken shape after 5 years since its launch. Ran Chengqi, director of China's satellite navigation system administration office and spokesman of Beidou satellite navigation system, gave a sketch of the country’s Beidou navigation industry at a press conference on December 27. In 2017, China's domestic satellite navigation industry has exceeded 250 billion yuan. And over 50 million Beidou chips were sold in the year.
Beidou satellite navigation system has been applied in many innovative ways. “The Beidou satellite navigation system has merged with cloud computing, big data and the Internet, forming a new industrial model. The industrial model is leading in international.” Ran Chengqi said that optimistically, China’s navigation industry will reach 400 billion yuan by 2020.
Third-generation Beidou system starts networking
Ran said that the third-generation Beidou system has started networking. In early November, China successfully launched two Beidou third-generation satellites in Xichang, marking the official start of Beidou’s global network construction. According to reports, the positioning accuracy of the third-generation Beidou system is 2.5 meters to 5 meters, 1 to 2 times higher than the second-generation.
To develop the Beidou navigation satellite system, China has taken steps. And the construction of the third-generation Beidou system is the last step. According to the plan, in 2018, China will provide services for countries along the "Belt and Road" and their neighboring countries; by the year 2020, it will launch 35 satellites to provide service for users worldwide.
“Five years ago, on December 27, 2012, the State Council Information Office held a press conference announcing that China Beidou satellite navigation system will begin to provide services. Five years have passed. The capabilities of China's Beidou system have been continuously enhanced. Its application industry has seen rapid growth. Its international cooperation has become a national business card,” Ran Chengqi said.
"With the start of the global networking construction of the third-generation Beidou system, the development of China's satellite navigation industry is expected to speed up again,” said Yang Wenwei, an analyst at Hongxin Securities.
Beidou industry develops fast
Beidou's application and industrialization have achieved remarkable results. According to reports, it has formed a complete industrial chain. It has been applied in national security and other key areas, and also massively used in consumption area. It is giving birth to a new application model.
"Beidou system’ basic products have achieved a historic leap .5 years ago, there is no domestically-made Beidou chip. Now we have great Beidou chips.”
Data shows that over 50 million Beidou chips were seld. The high-precision OEM board and receiver antennas respectively have accounted for 30 percent and 90 percent of the domestic market share.
“Beidou system is a global positioning system, and has a natural link with the transport sector. The Ministry of Transport formulated a special plan for the Beidou industrial application.” Peng Siyi, head of the Comprehensive Planning Department of the Ministry of Transport, told reporters that at present, about 4.8 million of vehicles, including vehicles transporting hazardous articles, coaches and route passenger vehicles, are equipped with Beidou terminals, forming the world's largest Beidou car networking platform.
"Compared to 2012, the major accident rate and casualty rate of road transport dropped by nearly 50 percent in 2016. The time for public security alarm was shortened by nearly 20 percent. The reporting time of emergency disaster was shortened to 1 hour. The emergency rescue response efficiency was doubled. More than 40,000 fishing vessels across the country have been equipped with Beidou service, rescuing over 10,000 fishermen," Ran said.
Integration with Beidou system has given birth to new business format. According to reports, it created more than 450,000 jobs in over 14,000 enterprises. The average annual growth rate of China’s satellite navigation industry is over 15 percent. In 2016, the industry exceeded 211.8 billion yuan. Beidou system contributed over 70 percent.
"In recent years, China's satellite navigation industry has witnessed rapid development. The industry has expanded from 12.7 billion yuan in 2006 to 211.8 billion yuan in 2016, an increase of 16 times over 10 years. By 2020, China's satellite navigation industry will grow to over 400 billion yuan. It is estimated that the average annual compound growth rate of China's satellite navigation industry in the next four years is expected to reach 17 percent. The industry is expected to continue to boom,” Yang Wenwei said.
