KABUL, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese company MCC 19 signed a contract with the Afghan government in the Presidential Palace on Tuesday to build 1,400 housing units in Kabul, a statement from the palace released here said.

Inked in the presence of President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, the housing project will be launched in the Nila Bagh area of Darul Aman.

The memorandum of understanding for the housing project was signed in 2015, according to the statement, under which China pledged to construct 10,000 apartments for the government's civil servants.

China has largely contributed to the reconstruction process of Afghanistan since the collapse of the Taliban reign in late 2001. The housing project is the largest China-funded project in the conflict-battered country.
