S.Korea's overseas direct investment hits record high in 2021

SEOUL, March 23 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's overseas direct investment hit a record high last year owing to the rapid growth in U.S. investment, a government report showed Wednesday.

The overseas direct investment came to 75.87 billion U.S. dollars in 2021, up 32.8 percent from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Economy and Finance. It was the highest since relevant data began to be compiled in 1968.

Direct investment in the United States surged 81.8 percent over the year to 27.59 billion dollars last year.

Investment in China and Luxembourg increased in double digits to 6.67 billion dollars and 4.38 billion dollars each.

Overseas investment in the finance and insurance industry jumped 58.5 percent to 29.32 billion dollars in 2021, and investment in the manufacturing sector advanced 38.5 percent to 18.17 billion dollars.

Investment in the real estate industry declined 9.1 percent to 7.01 billion dollars, but that in the information and communications and the wholesale and retail segments expanded in double figures to 6.67 billion dollars and 3.59 billion dollars, respectively.
