National development areas have become a major engine and support force for China to realize mid- to high growth in the backdrop of a new normal for the Chinese economy, said Xu Xuecai, a chief expert at the China Development Zone Investment Promotion on Wednesday while interpreting a research report on 2015 China development areas' competitiveness.

From an overall development of national development areas in 2014, those in eastern regions had prominent advantages while those in western regions accelerated their development pace, noted Xu. It's also noticeable that development areas' leading industries were concentrated in machine building, new energy and biomedicine fields. Last year, the country's national development areas totally achieved gross domestic product of 14.25 trillion yuan, accounting for 22.5 percent of national GDP, 0.4 percentage points higher than 2013.

In the future, China's development areas will focus on scientific planning, sound production and ecological environment, management services, regional integration, innovative development, industrial transformation and opening-up to raise their competitive advantages, pointed out Xu.

Meanwhile, the "Belt and Road" construction and the 13th five-year development plan (2016-2020) also encourage national development areas to "go out" and establish industrial clusters overseas to strengthen their international influence, added Xu.
