Tianjin will improve the management of sites where hazardous chemicals are stored with a 24-hour online monitoring system, a local safety administration bureau said. Two blasts ripped through a warehouse at around 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 12 in Tianjin Port, where large amounts of toxic chemicals were stored, including around 700 tonnes of sodium cyanide.
The blasts killed 165 people. Wei Qingsong, director of Tianjin work safety administration bureau,said the city was mulling a citywide work safety monitoring network, to cover places such as toxic chemicals warehouses, fireworks plants, construction sites and crowded public spaces.
A nationwide safety check was launched following the fatal incident. It found hazards at 80 sites in 29 of the 34 provincial-level regions. The Ministry of Public Security urged local governments to take effective measures to address all the issues discovered.
