The governor of east China's Jiangsu Province said on Monday that Jiangsu's GDP grew at 6.7 percent in 2018, surpassing 9 trillion yuan (148 billion U.S. dollars) for the first time.

Previously, Guangdong Province's GDP ranked first among China's provincial-level economies, reaching 8.99 trillion yuan in 2017. Guangdong will announce its 2018 GDP in an official work report later this month.

Wu Zhenglong, the governor of Jiangsu, said in the annual government work report at the opening meeting of the annual session of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Congress that Jiangsu's GDP grew from 8.59 trillion yuan in 2017 to 9.2 trillion yuan in 2018.

Jiangsu's economy has been bolstered by the development of new technologies, new industries, and new forms of business modes.

In 2018, 8,000 Jiangsu-based enterprises were recognized as national high-tech enterprises. The number of national and provincial key laboratories in Jiangsu reached 171, Wu said.

The production of urban rail trains, new energy vehicles, 3D printers, and smart televisions have become Jiangsu's booming industries with outputs maintaining a year-on-year growth rate of 107.1 percent, 139.9 percent, 51.4 percent, and 36.4 percent, respectively in 2018, the governor said.

He said the provincial government has set a GDP growth target of 6.5 percent for 2019.
