HONG KONG, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government said Sunday the exercise at the Legislative Council (LegCo) to amend two HKSAR ordinances concerning the transfer of fugitive offenders has been suspended.
Having regard to the strong and different views in society, the HKSAR government has suspended the legislative amendment exercise at the full Legislative Council with a view to restoring calmness in society as soon as possible and avoiding any injuries to any persons, a spokesperson of the HKSAR government said on Sunday evening.
The HKSAR government reiterated that there is no timetable for restarting the process.
The HKSAR chief executive admitted that the deficiencies in the HKSAR government's work had led to substantial controversies and disputes in society.
The chief executive apologized to the people of Hong Kong for this and pledged to adopt a most sincere and humble attitude to accept criticisms and make improvements in serving the public, the spokesman said.
