Macao unemployment rate drops to 1.7 pct from September to November 2019

Macao's general unemployment rate decreased to 1.7 percent and the unemployment rate of local residents decreased to 2.3 percent for the period from September to November 2019, the special administrative region's statistic service said here on Thursday.

The latest report from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that both rates went down by 0.1 percentage point from the previous period from August to October 2019.

Meanwhile, the underemployment rate held steady at 0.5 percent, the DSEC report added.

Total labour force of Macao was 394,100 and the labour force participation rate was 69.9 percent. Total employment was 387,600, an increase of 300 from the previous period. The number of employed residents totaled 280,300, down by 500.

The number of the unemployed was 6,500, down by 500 from the previous period. The proportion of new labour market entrants seeking their first job increased by 0.7 percentage points to 19.2 percent of the total unemployed.

In comparison with the period from September to November 2018, the unemployment rate stayed steady. The labour force participation rate dropped by 0.8 percentage points, while the underemployment rate rose by 0.2 percentage points.
