Shanghai opened its first 5G industrial park on Thursday with industry giants like Huawei and SAIC Motor settled to promote the integrative development of 5G technology with automobile and intelligent manufacturing.

Some 42 companies signed investment deals worth 13 billion yuan (about 1.86 billion U.S. dollars) at the opening ceremony held on the same day.

Located in the Jinqiao Economic and Technological Development Zone in central Pudong New Area, the park is application-oriented, with most of the major projects signed focusing on hardcore industries integrating 5G with intelligent connected vehicles, manufacturing and video solutions.

Yang Ye, head of the Jinqiao management bureau of the Shanghai pilot free trade zone, said since China ushered in an era of 5G commercialization in 2019, the industrial park has attracted 5G innovation centers of Huawei and China Mobile Shanghai, as well as an open lab of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

As a state-level development zone, Jinqiao is the high ground of China's electronic information and automotive industries.
