Macao's cross-border vehicle traffic plunges by 65 pct in February

Macao's cross-border vehicle traffic in February fell substantially by 65.0 percent year-on-year to 130,850 trips, the special administrative region's statistic service said here on Thursday.

The latest report from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) showed that the vehicle trips passing through the Border Gate and the Cotai Checkpoint tumbled by 64.8 percent and 78.8 percent respectively to 83,513 and 24,248.

The DSEC report added that the trips crossing the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge went up by 11.2 percent to 21,897.

In the first two months of 2020, cross-border vehicle traffic dropped by 33.1 percent year-on-year to 555,526 trips.

Meanwhile, arriving and departing commercial flights at the Macao International Airport plunged by 79.6 percent year-on-year to 1,138 trips in February, with trips to and from Chinese mainland (262) and China's Taiwan region (263) showing respective decline of 88.4 percent and 75.0 percent.

In the first two months, arriving and departing commercial flights fell by 30.5 percent year-on-year to 7,884 trips.

The licensed motor vehicles in Macao totaled 240,662 at the end of February, a slight increase of 0.6 percent year-on-year. As vehicle registration services were suspended in February amid the spread of novel coronavirus, new registration of motor vehicles reduced by 39.9 percent year-on-year to 436.

In the first two months of 2020, new registration of motor vehicles decreased by 31.0 percent year-on-year to 1,349.

The number of traffic accidents in February declined by 62.6 percent year-on-year to 431, and that of injuries totaled 150. In the first two months, there were 1,443 traffic accidents, involving 497 victims and three of them were killed.
