SEOUL, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's automotive production, local sale and export all fell last month amid the continued supply disruption of semiconductors used to manufacture vehicles, government data showed Tuesday.

The number of cars produced in domestic factories was 271,054 in January, down 13.7 percent from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

It was attributed to the supply disruption of chips as well as the halt of production among some local automakers for facility construction.

The automotive sale in the local market declined 19.2 percent to 111,294 units in January. The sale of locally-made vehicles slipped 18.6 percent, with the sale of imported cars dropping 22.3 percent to 17,331 units.

Car export reduced 6.4 percent over the year to 179,709 units last month.

In terms of value, the automotive shipment grew 2.3 percent to 4.09 billion U.S. dollars on solid demand for high-priced models.

Export for environmentally-friendly vehicles surged 36.8 percent from a year earlier to 44,877 units in January, taking up about a quarter of the total automotive export.

Auto parts export advanced 14.2 percent to 2.06 billion dollars in the cited month.
