The Mile 12-Ikorodu road widening and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects constructed by China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) in Lagos, Nigeria's economic hub, are set to bring benefit to millions of residents and motorists of the state.

The commissioning ceremony was held Thursday at the Majidun depot in Ikorudu with the participation of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, Managing Director of CCECC in Nigeria Li Qingyong, a National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State among other dignitaries.

Ambode said the projects showed the government's commitment to the infrastructural renewal and development of the state, noting that the commissioning is a milestone in public transportation system in the state.

The governor expressed his thanks to CCECC for a job well done in the development of the project. Also speaking, Li Qingyong, the CCECC boss in Nigeria, said with the completion of the project, motorists can heave sigh of relief that the road has been completed with travelling time reduced.

He said the road has lots of benefits, which include provision of affordable transport, better road network, faster and reliable journey times, clean and better quality buses, reduction in waiting time for buses with limited queues through improved bus frequencies and the provision of a safe and secured transportation system.

Li, who is also a chief in Ikorodu town, said the project was initiated as part of strategies to modernize the public transport, like other major city states in the around. Over 400,000 passengers would be carried daily by over 400 high capacity air-conditioned China's Yutong buses that have been prepared to run the corridor from Ikorodu - CMS via Mile 12.

The smoothness of the road is second to none in the state. The pedestrian bridges are the best in Lagos and in the country with their aesthetics. The project included widening of the road with two additional lanes and the placing of BRT lanes in the middle of the road.

The project is a two-in-one project, which includes the widening of the 13.5 kilometer road from four lanes to six lanes and the provision of BRT infrastructure that would support the operation of the system. The width of the existing road is a 7.5 meters, with central median of 2m width.
