Despite lack of relevant standards, low-speed electric quadricycle industry is emerging in China and becoming a driving force to economic development, said an expert with Society of Automotive Engineers of China (SAE-China) at a recent forum. Fu Yuwu, president of the SAE-China, said low-speed electric quadricycle is a good option for Chinese government to satisfy the demands for energy-saving and environmental-protection vehicles in the vast rural areas and small towns.
According to him, the SAE-China organized a research team to study in low-speed electric quadricycle as early as in June 2014. Huang Yonghe, a researcher with China Automotive Technology & Research Center, said low-speed electric quadricycles meet the consumers' demands and the practical situation of new energy vehicle industry, and the government shall encourage its development proactively.
"Let the market be determined by demands," said Han Qunshan, chairman of a Henan-based low-speed electric quadricycle maker Vorlon. He said vehicles that are priced between 20,000 yuan and 40,000 yuan can satisfy the market demands in small- and medium-sized cities and rural areas.
According to Han, low-speed electric quadricycles are safe if they are produced in accordance with the relevant automobile standards. Low-speed electric quadricycles, or small electric vehicles, are not considered as ordinary cars in most regions of China and usually travel on urban roads illegally. The maximum speed of most of such vehicles is lower than 70km/h, and the trip distance is less than 80km.
