A Chinese carrier and Phu Quoc International Airport on Phu Quoc, Vietnam's biggest island, have agreed to launch next year an air route between the island in southern Kien Giang province and the Chinese city of Guangzhou, local media reported Sunday.
The air route will be launched next January with frequency of three flights a week, Vietnam News Agency quoted Huynh Quang Hung, vice chairman of Phu Quoc District People's Committee, as saying.
Phu Quoc welcomed 750,000 local and international tourists in the first 10 months of this year, up 44 percent against the same period last year. Up to 90 percent of rooms in hotels and resorts on the island have been booked for the two remaining months of this year.
A plan on establishing Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone is being considered by the government, local newspaper Thanh Nien (Young People) reported.
The government has recently approved a mechanism for construction of an entertainment complex with a casino on the island. It is striving to become an international eco-tourism and resort center.
