Global notebook shipments totaled about 164.4 million units in 2015, dropping 6.4 percent year on year; but the shipments in 2016 are expected to grow slightly by around one percent year on year to 165 million units, according to the latest statistics released by market researcher TrendForce on Tuesday.
Global shipments of notebooks were sluggish in the first half of 2015 because of inventory reduction and the vendors increased their shipments in the second half year and the recession came to an end.
Wang Jingyi, a notebook analyst at TrendForce, said it was an extremely difficult year for the notebook computer market this year but the shipment was expected to be pulled out of recession in 2016.
Vendors including Xiaomi and Huawei have also joined in the notebook market and their participation is expected to activate the market and draw consumers' attention.
In the meantime, larger-screen mobile phones have replaced small-sized tablet computers, which lack of innovative products to attract consumers.
TrendForce hence adjusted down the prediction on global tablet computer shipments for 2015 to some 163.4 million units, down 14.9 percent year on year; and the shipments for 2016 were forecasted to be around 153.4 million units, down 6.1 percent.
Smartphone above 5-inch took an increasing market share in 2015 and pulled down the market share of 7-inch tablet computers to below 50 percent this year from 57 percent in 2014, vendors of tablet computers had to develop large-sized products to share the notebook market to fight against the invasion of large-sized mobile phones.
TrendForce predicted the market share of 10-inch above tablet computers will rise from 18 percent in 2015 to nearly 30 percent in 2016.
