China is actively implementing the strategy of adding potato to the category of staple grains and will significantly raise its planting area, unit yield, total output and potato grain products over the coming several years, according to a potato conference held Thursday.
After years' efforts, potato is expected to become the country's fourth staple grain after rice, wheat and corn. Experts at the conference predicted that more than 50 percent of China's potato output would be used as staple grain consumption by 2025. China has already become the biggest potato producing country in the world with planting area and output respectively hitting 5.33 million ha and 90 million tonnes.
