Xinhua News Agency President Cai Mingzhao on Thursday pledged to strengthen the news organization's cooperation with United Nations (UN) agencies so as to report on UN events in a more constructive and effective way.
During his meeting with the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG), Michael Moller, in the Palais des Nations, Cai said Xinhua would actively join the UN's efforts to make the world a better one through balanced but "constructive" coverage.
"The purpose of the UN is to make peace, development and human rights progresses. Xinhua will enhance its strength by conveying information that will help UN member states and the people of the world to achieve a better understanding, help them see more positive sides of the world, and give them more hope for the future," he noted.
Cai told the UN official that Xinhua had established two offices specially for the coverage of UN-related events, one in New York and one in Geneva, and altogether Xinhua had set up some 180 overseas bureaus.
"We both have a common aspiration for peace and development and should continue to carry out extensive cooperation," Cai said, adding Xinhua would continue to support the UN's cause through its global network.
In light of the objectives defined by the recently adopted UN Sustainable Development Goals and topical issues such as migration and disarmament, Moller stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation with media outlets. Moller said Geneva was the operational hub of the UN system, with a concentration of actors that work on a very broad range of issues that affect every individual on the planet every day.
"The need for a much tighter collaboration between the media and between the different agencies and organizations, not just UN organizations but others as well, who are going to help countries get to these goals, is even more important now," he highlighted.
