Global smartphone sales rose in the first quarter of 2016. World smartphone sales totaled 349 million, up 3.9 percent year on year, according to figures released Monday by technology consultancy firm Gartner.
Smart phones accounted for 78 percent of all phones sold. The performance was driven by rising demand for budget phones in emerging markets, and by the promotions for inexpensive 4G phones, according to the company.
Anshul Gupta, research director at Gartner, said that Chinese smartphones are taking a good amount of the market, with brands Huawei, Oppo and Xiaomi accounting for 17 percent of all smart phone sales.
