KATHMANDU, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Arrivals of Chinese nationals to Nepal plunged sharply in February as travel restrictions were imposed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Nepal's Department of Immigration said.

Nepal received 3,285 Chinese visitors in February this year by air, a sharp decline from 14,161 in the same month in 2019, said the department data.

In January this year, the number of Chinese nationals arriving in Nepal by air was 12,169, which is a slight downturn compared to the figure of 12,202 in January 2019.

Information officer at the department Ram Chandra Tiwari told Xinhua on Wednesday that data showed the status of foreign travelers to Nepal. Nepali officials said a sharp decline in visitors from China was due to the massive cut down in flights between the two countries.

In 2019, the Himalayan country had received 151,200 Chinese visitors by air while the number of them coming to Nepal by both air and land stood at 169,543, according to the Immigration Department.

Nepali had targeted to attract 350,000 Chinese tourists in 2020 as the Himalayan country was organizing the Visit Nepal Year 2020 with the aim of attracting 2 million foreign tourists.
