In comparison to February, the month before the outbreak of COVID-19 in Germany, the industry's turnover in June was still down by 42.2 percent, according to Destatis.
"The relaxation of the coronavirus protection measures had a positive impact on the German hotel and restaurant sector in June," Destatis noted.
The turnover was down by 52.4 percent in June in nominal terms compared to the same month of the previous year, according to Destatis.
The number of overnight stays in Germany's hotels and guesthouses rose from 11.2 million in May to 29.5 million in June, according to Destatis figures published last week.
"Even if the June figures are better than those of May and give hope for a slow recovery, there can really be no talk of a boom in German tourism this year," Norbert Kunz, managing director of German Tourism Association (DTV), said in a statement last week, adding that the losses from the lockdown were huge and "cannot be made up for this year."
