Chinese energy consumption may shrink in 2015 on industrial adjustment, said Zhou Dadi, a senior researcher with Energy Research Institute under the National Development and Reform Commission.

Speaking at a recent meeting, Zhou forecasted that national energy consumption may see negative growth in 2015 on weak demand for coal and other energy products. China would enter a period with low growth of energy consumption in the next five years and even longer time, said Zhou adding that the growth rate with Chinese primary energy consumption dropped to 3.8 percent in 2013 and 2.2 percent in 2014. Energy consumption from Chinese industrial sector could peak and even see decrease in 2016-2020, according to Zhou.

Averaged annual growth with primary energy consumption could fall below of 2 percent and growth rate with electricity consumption may not be higher than 3 percent. Moreover, Chinese coal consumption may have peaked and annual coal consumption in 2015 is set to shrink. Zhou urged the halt or suspension of building thermal power plants, control of building coal-based thermal power bases and adjustment of plan to build 14 energy bases.
