Alternative fuels based on methanol and ethanol would be the next choice to help reduce air pollutant emission in north China, said Guo Xinyu, vice chairman with China Alcohol and Ether Fuel Committee recently.

Methanol-based fuels would play a significant role in saving energy, reducing pollution and improving air quality in Beijing municipality, Tianjin municipality and Hebei province. China is estimated to have 98.68 million tonnes of methanol production capacity by 2020 while the central government has set a plan to slash coal consumption in Hebei, Tianjin, Shandong and Beijing in the coming years.
