Hong Kong stocks close 0.53 pct lower

Hong Kong stocks fell 117.47 points, or 0.53 percent, to close on Wednesday at 21,882.15. The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 21,868.03 and 22,114.56. Turnover totaled 44.93 billion HK dollars (about 5.78 billion U.S. dollars). The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index moved down 1.32 points, or 129.03 percent, to close at 9,659.88 points.

Three sub-indices lost ground, with the Finance sub-index falling the most by 0.8 percent, followed by the Commerce and Industry 0.38 percent and the Properties 0.31 percent. The Utilities rose 0.3 percent. Banking giant HSBC, which accounts for the largest weighting of the Hang Seng Index, fell 0.2 percent to 62.15 HK dollars. Bank of East Asia, one of the largest local banks in Hong Kong, gained 0.2 percent to close at 28.00 HK dollars. Local bourse operator HKEX fell 0.5 percent to 199.30 HK dollars. China Mobile, China's dominant mobile carrier, went down 0.5 percent to 87.35 HK dollars. China Unicom, another Chinese telecom giant, fell 1.0 percent to 9.44 HK dollars. Sun Hung Kai, one of Hong Kong's largest property developer by market value, closed down 0.2 percent to 93.80 HK dollars. Henderson Land ended 0.1 percent higher at 47.60 HK dollars. Mainland-based financial stocks ended lower. Bank of China went down 1.4 percent to 3.46 HK dollars. China Construction Bank lost 1.1 percent to 5.30 HK dollars. ICBC closed down 1.1 percent to 4.68 HK dollars. As for energy stocks, China's top refiner Sinopec moved down 0.8 percent to 4.71 HK dollars. PetroChina, the country's largest oil and gas producer, retreated 1.0 percent to 5.14 HK dollars. (1 U.S. dollar equals to 7.75 HK dollars)
