Asia Energy Cooperation Forum 2016 convened in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality on June 27 to discuss establishing an Asia energy cooperation mechanism.

Participants from governments and energy enterprises in over 10 countries including China, Russia, Republic of Korea, Azerbaijan and Malaysia, etc., as well as those from International Energy Agency attended the forum.

Zhao Mingwen, spokesman of the forum, noted in a briefing held on June 26 that the forum is aimed to promote the establishment of Asia energy cooperation mechanism, safeguard energy security, strengthen dialogue and cooperation among Asian countries, and accelerate cooperation among the Belt and Road countries.

"Setting up the Asia energy cooperation mechanism can not only inject new impetus for Asian regional cooperation, but also help realize diversified development goal in the region, and contribute to the safety and stability in Asia," said Zhao.

In order to formulate the Asia energy cooperation mechanism, Wang Zhengwei, vice chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, gave the following suggestions: Firstly, a regular meeting mechanism among Asia energy enterprises and experts in think tanks should be established in a bid to provide strategic consultation for enterprises and ensure a healthy development of Asia energy market. Meanwhile, academic communication among young people is also called for.

Secondly, an information exchange platform is advised to be set up in order to avoid information asymmetry and vicious competition.

Thirdly, energy think tanks are encouraged to conduct jointly research. It is their social responsibility to contribute ideas.

Fourthly, energy think tanks are responsible for providing policy consultancy for governments, promoting interaction between governments and enterprises, and safeguarding energy security.

Asia Energy Cooperation Forum 2016 is hosted by China Institute of International Studies and Chongqing Liangjiang New Area Government under the guidance of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Energy Administration and Chongqing Municipal People's Government.
