Southwest China's Sichuan Province has published implementation opinions on defusing overcapacity problem of the coal industry which proposed to shut down approximately 215 coal mines in three to five years.
This would cut about 33.03 million metric tons (tonnes) of coal production capacity during the period, according to the implementation opinions.
Sichuan Province would guide the orderly exits of the small coal mines with poor resource conditions, outdated technology, high risks as well as heavy losses through mergers and acquisitions as well as reorganizations, according to the opinions paper.
The province plans to stop approving new coal mine projects as well as capacity expansion projects in the following three years from 2016, it said.
