China's leading bankcard operator - China UnionPay announced that inter-bank UnionPay card transactions mounted up to 646.9 billion yuan during the 7-day long National Day holiday (Oct. 1-7), up 25.4 percent from a year earlier.
Total transactions numbered over 500 million, up 19.5 percent year on year, driven by resilient shopping and sky-rocketing travel-related payment.
According to UnionPay, payment via UnionPay cards for shopping activities during the holiday exceeded 100 billion yuan, up 30 percent from a year ago, contributed mainly by shopping at supermarkets or for large home appliances and daily necessities.
Payment via UnionPay cards for travel by railways and by air soared 70 percent from the National Day holiday last year, with those for highway use and gasoline and other fuels consumption up 179 percent and 33 percent year on year.
Besides, payment via UnionPay cards for travel services from travel agencies and tickets for scenic spots up 41 percent year on year.
UnionPay card transaction data showed that short-distance trips to countries such as Japan, the Republic of Korea and Thailand were favored by Chinese tourists and travel to European nations including France and Italy also grew thanks to improved UionPay card acceptance in overseas market.
