High-end hotels in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality have been required to ban debt defaulters, police said.

Debt defaulters have been refused to check in at four- and five-star hotels 2,187 times since October 2017, said a police officer with the municipal public security bureau.

The court blacklist database of those who fail to repay their debts has been connected to the hotel information management system. If anyone on the list intends to check in, the hotel will be notified automatically by the system, the officer said. Hotels violating the ban will be fined.

As authorities work to establish a reliable nationwide credit rating system, courts are exploring new ways of punishing those who do not pay their debts despite valid verdicts. Among them are bans on first-class flights and lower scores on Sesame Credit, a credit-scoring system run by Alibaba subsidiary Ant Financial.
