China Association for Research and Advancement of Traditional Chinese Medicine established a medical thermography science academy in southwest China's Chongqing on Saturday, aiming to promote new technology development in traditional Chinese medical sciences.

According to a summit sponsored by the association, the new academy will engage in relevant research and communication, training and education, product development, standard formulation, technology popularization and convening academic conferences.

Wu Shiming, president of the new academy, said medical thermography, or medical infrared thermal imaging, is playing an increasingly important role in clinical practice not only for traditional Chinese medical science but also for western medical science.

Through 21-year-long research, cooperation with engineers and clinical practice, a research team led by Wu has developed the third general medical thermography devices and built a basic data base for its application.

By now, many Chinese hospitals have been using medical thermography for diagnosis, and the average accuracy rate of the devices and data base has exceeded 85 percent. Wu said the new academy will work as a platform to strengthen cooperation, communication and technology development for medical thermography to further popularize its application.

In the future, intellectualized medical thermography devices will go into millions of families and become as popular as clinical thermometers, he said. (Contributed by Li Xiaoyu, Lixy@xinhua.org)
