On December 28, China launched the 10,000 genome program. This is China’s first major national plan in human genome research and is also the largest human genome project in the world.

According to CCTV news on December 28, scientists hope to explore the relationship between disease health and genetic inheritance by mapping a fine genome map of the Chinese people. The genome program will not only cover the Han ethnic group but also Zhuang and Hui ethnic groups with a population of over 5 million.

Genes are DNA fragments of genetic effects. Human’s health, sickness and dead have close relation with gene. Genes are part of genome. There are been about 25,000 genes in human. And the program aims to decode the 25,000 genes in human body, thus deciphering human genetic information. It will map the genetic map of the Chinese people.

Professor Wang Yadong, chief scientist of the program, said that the main goal of the program is to study how Chinese people change from health into disease to provide reference for Chinese medical research or clinical diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Zhao Guoping, director of the National Human Genome Research Center for Southern China and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, also said that the program will bring great benefits for the Chinese people, including the Han nationality and ethnic minorities, for them to understand genetic backgrounds of their disease and health.

According to the plan, the program will complete all the sequencing and analysis tasks in four years. It will become the most fast genome project in the world.
