BEIJING, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's Guangdong Province will invest at least 500 million yuan (about 71.4 million U.S. dollars) in research projects to support the fight against the novel coronavirus, the People's Daily reported Tuesday.
These projects will focus on several sci-tech aspects, including clinical treatment, virus tracking, pathogenic mechanism, vaccine development and drug manufacturing, according to a notice issued by the provincial sci-tech department.
The province will reward frontline researchers and recommend those who have made contributions to the prevention and control of the epidemic for provincial sci-tech awards.
Guangdong will also offer financial support to projects with the participation of institutes and experts from Hong Kong and Macao. Research cooperation with other countries and international organizations are encouraged.
By the end of Monday, Guangdong had reported a total of 1,328 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus.
