China to own 800,000 industrial robots by 2020

An official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said on Monday that China's ownership of industrial robots will reach 800,000 units by 2020.

Wang Jianyu, a section chief under MIIT, said on the sidelines of the World Robot Conference 2015 that China has completed the first draft of the 13th Five-Year Plan for robot industry, which will focus on the huge demands from economic transformation and social development.

The official said the program will target at boosting smart manufacturing and improving people's living style. It will strive to make breakthroughs in the application of key parts and high-end products and promote product quality, market occupancy and enterprise competitiveness, in a bid to boost healthy and sustainable development of the robot industry.

Statistics show China's industrial robot market registered an annual average growth of 58.9 percent in sales from 2009 to 2014. Last year, China's industrial robot sales exceeded 56,000 units, accounting for one-fourth of the world's total.
