BEIJING, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Sales of passenger cars in China last month rose from a year earlier when car sales plummeted amid the COVID-19 epidemic, an industry association said Tuesday.

Retail sales of passenger vehicles, including sedans, sport-utility vehicles, and multipurpose vehicles, increased 12.4 percent year on year to about 1.61 million units in April, data by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) showed.

The figure fell 8.3 percent in April from March, the association said.

Passenger vehicle sales in the first four months stood at 6.7 million units, a 50.7-percent rise year on year and a record jump since the CPCA began tracking retail sales in 2005. The association attributed the high growth to the low base effect.

Luxury car sales rose 30 percent year on year in April. Compared with the same month in 2019, it rose 50 percent, reflecting robust growth amid China's consumption upgrades, the association added.
