China imported 1.17 billion US dollars worth of diamond in the first eight months of 2015, down 25 percent from the year earlier period, according to the Shanghai Diamond Exchange (SDE) on Tuesday.

In January-August, the country's diamond imports amounted to 976,100 karats, down 19.4 percent year on year. The exchange attributed the fall in diamond imports to the slow recovery of domestic economy and fall in diamond prices.

Meanwhile, diamond transactions on the SDE in the first eight months saw a volume of about 133 million karats, 14.19 times the transactions in the same period of last year, but the value was down 14.6 percent year on year to 2.869 billion US dollars.

The SDE is the only platform for diamond trading, imports and exports in China. By August 31, it had 380 members and about 61.3 percent were from overseas.
